Epicondylitis is a disorder that causes chronic inflammation in an epicondyle of the elbow. It usually presents itself as two bones protruding at the elbow. One of the bones usually points away from the body and this is known as the lateral bone. The other one points towards the body, and this is called the medial bone. As such, there are basically two types of epicondylitis and they are as discussed below-:
Lateral Epicondylitis
Lateral epicondylitis is also known as tennis elbow. This is a condition that happens whenever there is an overuse of the tendons and the muscles present in the forearm just close to the elbow joint. Those suffering from this condition will often realize that the outside of the elbow appears to be tender and painful. This condition is nicknamed tennis elbow because it is mostly associated with tennis players as a result of the repeated actions of striking the tennis ball, leading to numerous flexing of the elbow tendons. However, elbow epicondylitis is not exclusive to tennis players, and anyone can experience it, irrespective of whether or not they play tennis.
Medial Epicondylitis
Medial epicondylitis is also known as golfer’s elbow. It is a condition caused as a result of repetitive strain injuries to the flexor tendons of the forearm responsible for connecting the elbow and the medial epicondyle muscles. Just like tennis elbow, this condition is a result of overuse of the tendons and the muscles of the forearm due to the repetitive nature of the sport. And just like tennis elbow, anyone can be affected with golfer’s elbow and it is not a condition reserved for those playing golf.
There are various treatments for these conditions and earlier detection is imperative if you don’t want to get into deeper trouble. Once a doctor has examined you, they will advise on the best cause of action to bring you relief from the condition. Some of the common treatments for milder cases include the use of braces such as elbow epicondylitis braces.
