Tennis elbow surgery may be a necessary intervention for treating elbow epicondylitis when all other non-surgical treatments have not been successful. Statistics show that nearly 95% of those suffering from this condition don’t usually have to go under the knife to have it treated.
If you are among the unlucky 5%, then you don’t have to worry since this is also an effective treatment for the condition. But once the surgery is done, you must be careful with the recovery process so that you increase your chances of healing properly within an acceptable time. Below is a brief look at some of the things you may expect during your recovery.
Be patient
The rehabilitation of your elbow will commence immediately after you are back in your hospital room. You may begin by relaxing the muscles on your elbow to avoid any inflammation.
Your arm will likely be in a splint, and it could also be wrapped with ice as a way of helping to control the pain and the potential swelling. You will also have pain medication after the surgery, and you will likely have to take it for a couple of days after the operation.
Taking care of your elbow at home
Your stay at the hospital will not be long following your tennis elbow treatment.
When you are discharged to go back home following the surgery, your doctor will give you a set of instructions of what you need to do and what you need not do for the safe recovery of your elbow. In general, you will be required to observe the following:
- Don’t use the surgery arm for supporting yourself in any way, including getting out of bed and standing up from a chair.
- Don’t use the surgery arm for pulling or pushing anything for at least six weeks after the surgery.
- Be careful with the range of motion restrictions on the surgery arm.
- Avoid lifting weights after the surgery, or do so as recommended by your doctor.
- If recommended, wear a sling every night for at least the first month after the surgery.
- Avoid all forms of contact sports after the surgery.
- Avoid certain household chores that may put a lot of stress on your elbow. These include sweeping, mopping, raking, and using the vacuum cleaner, among others.
You must remember that your elbow is a very sensitive joint, and it will need all the time it wants for full recovery after a tennis elbow treatment via surgery. If you follow all of your surgeon’s instructions, then the road to recovery should not be a long one at all.
